MEDIA RELEASE

Iconic Mural is ready for installation at Narrogin Regional Leisure Centre

The Narrogin Regional Leisure Centre is set to undergo a stunning transformation, with the entire eastern side of the building being turned into an iconic mural. This ambitious project, proposed by the Townscape Advisory Committee, aims to capture and celebrate the unique culture, character, and spirit of the Narrogin community. The design pays tribute to the Narrogin Community Resilience and Recovery Initiative following the 2022 bushfires, capturing themes of community spirit, local attractions, Indigenous culture, sporting events, and recreation.

Shire President Mr. Leigh Ballard emphasised the significance of the mural to the local community, stating, "This mural is a powerful way to show what makes Narrogin special. It reflects our strength, our culture, and the way we come together as a community. Turning the Narrogin Regional Leisure Centre into a canvas for this artwork is a celebration of who we are, and I believe it will become a source of pride for everyone in our town."

Artist Jerome Davenport, renowned for his vibrant and dynamic style, has been selected to bring this vision to life. An acclaimed Australian aerosol artist, Davenport was born in Narrogin and grew up in Wickepin. He is celebrated for his innovative fusion of graffiti, muralism, and natural elements. His work is distinguished by a unique blend of colour and energy that resonates on a global scale.

Davenport shared his excitement about the project, saying, "I feel incredibly fortunate to return to my roots and have the opportunity to create this mural for the Shire of Narrogin. This community holds a special place in my heart, and being able to contribute to its cultural landscape through my art is both an honour and a privilege. I hope that this mural not only reflects the spirit and history of Narrogin but also serves as a lasting piece of art that the community can enjoy and take pride in for many years to come. My goal is to create something that resonates with the people here, celebrates our shared stories, and enhances the beauty of this place we all call home."

Adding a significant layer of cultural depth to the project is local emerging artist Chante Kickett. Her Aboriginal artwork seamlessly integrates Indigenous elements into the mural, telling a powerful story of journey, exploration, and the enduring connection between people and the land. Through vibrant colours and a tranquil setting, Kickett’s work beautifully captures the rich cultural heritage of the region, making her contribution an integral part of the mural's narrative.

The Shire of Narrogin is thrilled to see this project come to fruition and looks forward to the positive impact it will have on the community, further solidifying the Narrogin Regional Leisure Centre as a central hub of recreational and community activities.

Regina Razumovskaya, the project coordinator, extends her gratitude to the funding partners who made this project possible. Special thanks go to Lotterywest, CBH and the Council of the Shire of Narrogin for their financial support for this ambitious project.
