Pigeon Control and Eradication in Narrogin
A community-wide effort to protect our buildings, our health, and our amenity.
Why Pigeon Control?
Feral pigeons have become a persistent issue in the Narrogin CBD and surrounding townsite — damaging heritage buildings, creating health risks, and adding to property maintenance costs. In response, the Shire has adopted a structured, humane and proactive Pigeon Control and Eradication Strategy.
This strategy focuses on reducing the pigeon population through non-lethal fertility control, building proofing, community education, and landowner cooperation.
🏛 What the Shire is Doing
In March 2025, Council endorsed a resolution to consider allocating $10,000 in the 2025/26 budget to implement the strategy. This includes:
- Annual OvoControl fertility control (a proven bird contraceptive)
- Pigeon-proofing key Shire buildings like the Town Hall, Goods Shed, and Railway Station
- Development of educational materials and workshops
- Engagement and support for landowners with known pigeon issues
The Shire is leading by example — treating and securing its own buildings first.
🏘 What Landowners and CBD Property Owners Need to Know
If you own a building in the CBD or elsewhere in Narrogin:
- You may be invited to participate in the OvoControl program or be offered support to install proofing devices like netting or spikes.
- You’ll receive education materials and advice on how to manage or prevent pigeon roosting on your property.
- The Shire may offer initial subsidies or assistance for pigeon-proofing.
- Under the Health Local Law 2022, owners may be required to act if a pigeon infestation is found on their premises. Enforcement is a last resort — voluntary cooperation is strongly encouraged.
