Council Approves 2025 Landcare Project Fund Recipients

The Shire of Narrogin has announced the approved recipients of the 2025 Landcare Project Fund, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability and biodiversity enhancement.

At the Council meeting on 26 March 2025, amendments to the 2024/25 Budget were approved to increase funding for community-led Landcare initiatives. The total allocation for Landcare Community Projects has been increased to over $7,700, ensuring greater support for local conservation efforts.

The following applicants have been awarded funding this year:

  • AG & MF Borthwick – $3,323 for the purchase of 7,750 native plant species to support revegetation efforts on a property on Pethybridge Rd, Boundain.
  • M & CB Boothey – $1,200 for the acquisition of 90 native plant species to enhance biodiversity at a property on Cooraminning Road, Dumberning.
  • AJ & JG & MM Armstrong – $3,365 for the purchase of 7,648 native plant species to facilitate ecological restoration on a property on Kilpatrick Road, Narrogin.

To ensure accountability and the successful completion of these projects, all grant recipients must adhere to several simple conditions:

Additionally, the Shire has refined its Landcare Grant Guidelines to enhance future project eligibility and assessment. Key updates include:

Eligibility Criteria Updates:

  • Applicants who received funding in the previous financial year are ineligible to apply.
  • Projects must prioritise biodiversity by incorporating a diverse mix of locally native plant species. Proposals featuring monoculture plantings or those intended primarily for commercial purposes, such as timber farming or agroforestry, will not be eligible.

Assessment Criteria Enhancement:

  • Preference will be given to projects that promote ecological resilience through diverse native species plantings.
  • Proposals demonstrating clear biodiversity benefits and habitat creation will be prioritised over commercially driven initiatives.

Shire President Mr. Leigh Ballard welcomed the funding allocations, stating: "The Landcare Project Fund plays a crucial role in rehabilitating our landscapes by supporting the planting of native species to restore degraded land. These projects will help tackle key environmental challenges such as salinity, erosion, and soil degradation, ensuring our region remains productive and ecologically resilient for the future."

The Shire of Narrogin extends its congratulations to the successful applicants and looks forward to seeing their projects contribute to a healthier and more sustainable environment.
