Shire of Narrogin Welcomes Cook Government’s Commitment to Returning Freight Rail Network to Public Hands
The Shire of Narrogin is delighted with the recent announcement by the Cook Government to enter negotiations to secure control of Western Australia’s freight rail network. This decision represents a pivotal moment for regional communities, particularly in the Wheatbelt, where rail infrastructure is a critical lifeline for agriculture, industry, and the local economy.
Shire President Leigh Ballard stated, “Narrogin was once a thriving rail hub, and this announcement brings hope and opportunity for our community to reclaim its role as a central player in servicing and expanding the rail network across the Wheatbelt region. We strongly believe Narrogin has the capacity to support rail operations, from maintenance to logistics, and we look forward to working with the State Government to make this vision a reality.”
President Ballard emphasised the historical significance of Narrogin’s rail heritage and its potential for revitalisation: “The rail network’s restoration and expansion would not only benefit farmers and industry by improving the efficiency of grain and commodity transport but also create local jobs and stimulate economic growth in our region. It’s a win for Narrogin, the Wheatbelt, and the entire State.”
The Shire of Narrogin believes that State Government ownership and management of the freight rail network will deliver the best outcomes for regional communities. Public control would ensure greater investment in critical infrastructure, enable sustainable long-term planning, and provide more opportunities for local employment—as was the case before the network’s privatisation in 2000.
President Ballard also commented on the challenges posed by the privatisation of the rail network: “The lack of adequate maintenance and the underutilisation of Tier 3 rail lines have significantly impacted our region. A return to public ownership provides the opportunity to reverse these trends and prioritise the needs of our communities, industries, and farmers. It’s encouraging to see the State Government acknowledge this and take action.”
The Shire commends the Cook Government’s commitment to addressing the growing demands on the freight rail network, supporting regional jobs, and ensuring Western Australia’s economic competitiveness on a global scale. By reducing reliance on road transport, this initiative also aligns with goals to enhance road safety and reduce environmental impacts.
“This announcement has the potential to restore Narrogin as a vital hub for rail operations, creating new opportunities for our community while supporting the entire Wheatbelt region,” President Ballard concluded. “We are eager to collaborate with the State Government to maximise the benefits of this significant step forward.”
The Shire of Narrogin looks forward to further updates and remains committed to advocating for regional development through this transformative project.
