This project will invite local Noongars to speak of their history and culture in a safe forum and offer a grassroots, organic process for collecting and recording stories relating to significant sites. The intent of this project is to move towards recording this material to later inform the content of interpretive signage associated with sites of significance identified by Noongar people.
The Manager of Community Leisure & Culture and the Community Development Officer will collaborate with the local Noongar community through a series of forums, workshops and meetings to explore the meaning of sites in the Shire’s boundaries which are viewed as significant to local Noongars.
This will also allow us to explore with the local Noongar community names of places significant to Noongars which may attract dual naming in the town site. Since the 2000’s an increasing number of place names across Australia have been reclaimed and an Aboriginal name has been added to the European name.
