Mural Unveiled at Narrogin Regional Leisure Centre in Celebration of Community Spirit.
The Shire of Narrogin proudly unveiled the much-anticipated mural on the eastern side of the Narrogin Regional Leisure Centre during a special opening ceremony on Friday evening, December 13. This vibrant and meaningful artwork, spearheaded by the Townscape Advisory Committee, stands as a tribute to the resilience, culture, and community spirit of Narrogin, particularly in the aftermath of the 2022 bushfires.
The mural’s design reflects the essence of Narrogin, capturing themes of community strength, local attractions, Indigenous heritage, sporting achievements, and recreation. Its completion transforms the Narrogin Regional Leisure Centre into an iconic landmark that celebrates the town's identity and history.
Shire President Leigh Ballard expressed his pride in the project, stating, " This mural is a lasting reminder of the strength and connectedness of all the volunteers who helped in the fight against the fires. And it’s not just a symbol of what we’ve overcome, but also a recognition of how we’ve come together as a community to rebuild and recover."
The mural was brought to life by renowned aerosol artist Jerome Davenport, whose roots trace back to Narrogin and Wickepin. Known for his dynamic and colourful style, Davenport shared his enthusiasm, saying, " It’s been a true honour to be invited back to Narrogin which has a special place in my heart. The response from the community has been overwhelming positive and I hope the artwork is enjoyed for many years to come."
Adding depth and cultural significance, local artist Chante Kickett contributed an Indigenous artwork that complements the mural’s narrative. Kickett’s piece symbolises an Indigenous journey through country, blending themes of connection to the land and ancestral guidance with vibrant and tranquil imagery.
The project was made possible through the generous support of funding partners, including Lotterywest and CBH Group, whose contributions were acknowledged during the ceremony.
The opening ceremony featured speeches by Shire President Leigh Ballard, artist Jerome Davenport, and Townscape Advisory Committee Chair Roxanne McNab, who all spoke about the mural’s significance to the community and its lasting legacy.
The Shire of Narrogin invites residents and visitors alike to view this stunning artwork, which now stands as a beacon of community pride and resilience at the Narrogin Regional Leisure Centre.
