Local Heritage Champion Morrie Russell Honoured at 2024 WA Heritage Awards

The Shire of Narrogin has announced that local heritage champion Morrie Russell has received a prestigious commendation during the 2024 WA Heritage Awards. Held at the Walyalup Civic Centre in Fremantle, on Friday 29 November 2024, the awards celebrated the exceptional contributions of Western Australians to heritage conservation and promotion.

Morrie Russell was recognised in the category of Voluntary Individual Contribution for his extraordinary work on a meticulously crafted N-scale diorama that showcases Narrogin’s rail heyday in the 1960s. Spanning 7 meters by 2.5 metres, the diorama is a visual masterpiece that brings to life the integral role of railways in the town’s development and prosperity.

Deputy President of the Shire of Narrogin, Cr Graham Broad, present with Morrie at the awards night, praised Morrie’s commitment: "Morrie’s passion and dedication are a shining example of how one individual can bring history to life. His diorama captures the spirit of Narrogin’s past while inspiring future generations to celebrate and preserve our heritage. This commendation is a well-deserved recognition of his remarkable efforts."

Reflecting on the accolade, Morrie Russell shared: "It’s been an absolute privilege to bring Narrogin’s rail history to life through the diorama. Seeing the joy and curiosity it sparks in visitors, especially young people, is incredibly rewarding. I’m honoured to have my work recognised at the WA Heritage Awards."

Dale Stewart, CEO of the Shire of Narrogin, commended Morrie’s unwavering dedication to heritage preservation: "Morrie’s contribution goes beyond his artistic and historical expertise—he embodies the heart and soul of community heritage. His work not only honours Narrogin’s past but also strengthens the town’s cultural identity for future generations."

Councillor Broad added, “The Shire of Narrogin extends its heartfelt congratulations to Morrie for this commendation and gratitude for his invaluable contributions to the community”.
